Does NEWSA have money to help pay for my travel/lodging?

NEWSA has very limited funds to assist participants with travel or lodging costs. Learn more about the Glen Elder Travel Award here.

We also provide reduced registration and lodging rates for participants travelling from southern Africa, non-tenure track scholars, and graduate students. NEWSA makes every effort to keep costs for the participants and fees are very reasonable.

We encourage participants from southern Africa to seek external funding and to try to arrange talks at other northeast US institutions in order to justify such funding. We are happy to facilitate connections with local universities if interested.

What is the difference between a workshop and a conference?

NEWSA is explicitly a workshop that emphasizes camaraderie and intense discussion. All participants are expected to come having read the papers so that they can offer thoughtful and helpful suggestions. Unlike a regular conference, the questions and comments come from knowledge of the papers that were precirculated. Participants are encouraged to keep their presentations short so that the emphasis is on discussing the papers.

How do I subscribe/unsubscribe to the NEWSA listserv?

NEWSA uses a listserv to send out announcements regarding workshops and other pertinent information. To be added to the listserv, email Liz Timbs (liz DOT timbs AT gmail DOT com).
